Gaming or Guessing: Mixing and best-responding in Matching Pennies

چکیده
A natural intuition for mixed strategies in competitive games is that players randomize to remain unpredictable, but this is a theoretically fragile notion. A player should only randomize between strategies if indifferent, and even then could choose a pure strategy or any disequilibrium mixed strategy. Various theories instead describe mixed strategies not due to random play, but rather to heterogeneous purestrategy play. I conduct experiments in which game players are mirrored by guessers who make predictions about game play. This distinguishes best-responding (by the guessers) from game playing. In a Matching Pennies game, I find that game players are both more interested in unpredictability and actually more

Stochastic Perturbations of Discontinuous Dynamics with Applications to Game Theory
The Nash equilibrium is a key concept in game theory and in economic theory. However, as a static notion it does not help us to understand how the equilibrium is reached or how an equilibrium is selected when a game has multiple equilibria. Thus, dynamical models that are based on best responding, i.e., models where the players are trying to maximize their payoffs in order the reach an equilibr...
متن کاملDeterministic approximation of best-response dynamics for the Matching Pennies game
We consider stochastic dynamics for the Matching Pennies game, which behave, in expectation, like the best-response dynamics (i.e., the continuous fictitious play). Since the corresponding vector field is not continuous, we cannot apply the deterministic approximation results of Benäım and Weibull [2003]. Nevertheless, we prove such results for our dynamics by developing the notion of a “leadin...
متن کاملAndrea Gallice: Best Responding to What? A Behavioral Approach to One Shot Play in 2x2 Games
We introduce a simple procedure to be used for selecting the strategies most likely to be played by inexperienced agents who interact in one shot 2x2 games. We start with an axiomatic description of a function that may capture players’ beliefs. Various proposals connected with the concept of mixed strategy Nash equilibrium do not match this description. On the other hand minimax regret obeys al...
متن کاملTesting randomness by Matching Pennies
In the game of Matching Pennies, Alice and Bob each hold a penny, and at every tick of the clock they simultaneously display the head or the tail sides of their coins. If they both display the same side, then Alice wins Bob’s penny; if they display different sides, then Bob wins Alice’s penny. To avoid giving the opponent a chance to win, both players seem to have nothing else to do but to rand...
متن کاملI-38: Individualized Controlled Ovarian Stimulation: Matching Protocols with Patient Profile
The aim of all assisted reproductive techniques (ART) is a live birth of a single healthy baby. Many clinical and laboratory strategies can influence the ART clinical outcomes. In this lecture we try to explore the clinical and laboratory strategies to maximize success in ART. Three are the main issues: 1. optimize the number of oocyte retrieved with an individualized controlled ovarian superov...
